An Interview With Dr. Garden, A Qualified Dentist In Berkeley

When should parents take their children for their first dental checkup?

The first visit to the dentist may be the most important. This will shape their minds and form opinions that will last forever. Most people with dental fear reveal they have had some kind of trauma when they were young. The goal is to make this visit as pleasant as possible. Most children have their first dental visit around the age of three. I would suggest your child go with you to your general exam and cleaning as to familiarize them to the surroundings. They may even want to sit in the chair. If they see you having a cleaning it will encourage them. A gift from the toy chest does not hurt. If you have any dental fear keep it to yourself. Remember, positive reinforcement. There are several excellent children's books that help to prepare both of you. I highly recommend reading one or more before your visit. Whether you choose a pedodontist (child dentist) or a general dentist that treats children is a personal choice. Some people like the convenience of everyone in the family being treated in the same office. Other times a child may have specific health matters, special needs or behavior issues. In any circumstance a parent knows the needs and personality of their child. When you have selected your dentist get ready to set an appointment. When you call, if you have specific questions or concerns express them to the receptionist. Ask what their treatment will be on the first visit. They may ask for insurance information, so have it ready. Do not be shy about asking directions or whether they need you early to fill out forms. Remember, the first impression can be the most important. Make it special. If you are lost and feel rushed you exhibit stress and your child will sense that vibe. Keep in mind, that it's good for most children to see a dentist around age three. However, if you choose to wait many schools will require your child to have a dental visit before they may register. If they do, you will be given a form for the dentist to fill out. Bring this with you so it may be done at that visit. It really does save time. Wherever you go, enjoy your first visit.
