What should be used to clean a baby's teeth?
There are finger wipes that are commercially available to clean an infant's gum pads and teeth. No toothpaste is needed. These are very effective. At the same time, a simple soft moist washcloth can do the same job. The cloth should be wrapped around the finger and gently wiped across the gum pads and teeth to remove the plaque and massage the gum tissues. This can also minimize teething pain.
What should a parent do if their child has a toothache?
A parent should evaluate what type of oral pain there is, soft tissue (the gums), or hard tissue (the teeth). If there is a cut, cold sore, or gum irritation, rinsing with warm salt water can be helpful, Vitamin E oil can be placed on cuts or cold sores. If there is tooth pain, keeping away from extreme hot or cold foods and drinks is recommended. Use Tylenol or children's Motrin for pain, rather than aspirin. Never place aspirin on the gums directly as it can burn the tissues. And see a pediatric dentist as soon as possible to determine the specific problem and treat it, to take your child out of pain.
Who is a Pediatric Dentist?
A pediatric dentist is a professional that has education that includes four years of University training with a concentration in the sciences, four years of dental school, and two to three years of post doctoral training in the specific care of infants, children and teens. They are considered the pediatricians of dental care for children.
What is the difference between a pediatric dentist and a family dentist?
A pediatric dentist has an additional two to three years of post-doctoral training in a University based or hospital based program. The training includes learning to manage and guide the behavior of children, specific preventive protocols, and restorative (fillings and cosmetic dental procedures) options specifically related to children from birth to young adulthood. Growth and development of the face, teeth, and occlusion (bite/orthodontic issues) is also covered in detail in order to incercept and prevent developing orthodontic problems.
