What will happen during my child's first visit to the dentist?
They will be introduced to the hygienest. Depending on their age and the development of their teeth, x-rays may or may not be taken. If the dentist can see between the back teeth or if their is space between the back molars x-rays are generally not needed. If your child will allow us to clean their teeth, this can be done at this visit and usually involves polishing all teeth in top and the bottom. The dentist will come in to check each of the teeth and count them to make sure there are the correct amount for the age of the child. Fluoride may or may not be applied depending on the parent's request, the patient's tolerance and age. A prize will be awarded for good behavior which they always enjoy.
How often should I schedule dentist appointments for my child?
It is important for them to have good experiences at an early age. If they see the dentist every 6 months then if their is any treatment that needs to be done, it can be done without having a painful experience. Most unpleasant experiences in the dental office are because patients have waited too long to come in. If you make it part of a healthy routine then the experience can be a good one for them. Prevention is much better than fixing.
How can I prepare my child for his first dental appointment?
Be positive. Too many children come in fearing the dentist because their parents fear the dentist. If you are one who has had a bad experience or who fears the dentist do not pass that on to your child. Dentistry has come a long way in becoming more pleasant and if you share with them positive comments they will view the office positively and we will make sure they remain positive once they get here.
When should parents take their children for their first dental checkup?
As soon as the child can sit still in a chair. Most children will allow a happy visit at 18 months-2years. At this point most primary or baby teeth are in and can be examined. If there is any question about their teeth prior to this or if you notice anything which appears not normal they should be taken in sooner. The first visit is to help them feel comfortable in the dental office. We try to keep everything positive so that they want to come back the next time.
