An Interview With Dr. Kaaren G. Vargas, DDS, PhD , A Qualified Dentist For Moms In North Liberty

1. When should parents take their children for their first dental checkup?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child' s first visit to a dentist be by age 1.

2. What happens during my child' s first visit to the dentist?

During this first visit, the dentist will, most likely, examine your child in a "lap" or "knee to knee" position. He/she will most often brush the child' s teeth and answer questions that a parent may have. The visit also has the purpose of establishing a "Dental Home" for the patient and to give guidance to the parent on issues such as: trauma, growth and development, tooth eruption and prevention of caries

3. How can I prepare my child for his first dental appointment?

If your child is less than 1, very little or no preparation is needed. After the age of 2, a parent can let the child know that the dentist will use a mirror to count the teeth, will brush the teeth, he or she may take some pictures and brush on vitamins (fluoride). No further preparation should be needed. Please note, that although we strive to make every visit as pleasant for a child as possible, most children up to the age of 4 may cry during even a routine dental visit. This is perfectly normal and will not lead to any future fear or phobia of the dentist.

4. How often should I schedule dentist appointments for my child?

Routine dental care is on average every 6 months; however, this will change based on the risk of cavities for your child. If a child is at a very high risk, the frequency may be every 3 months. If your child is at a very low risk, the frequency may be every year.

5. When Will My Baby Start Getting Teeth?

The average age for babies to start getting teeth is 6 months; however, this varies by individual. All 20 baby teeth are usually present by age 3.
