An Interview With Dr. Sachs, A Qualified Dentist In Towson

When should parents take their children for their first dental checkup?

Ideally, when the first teeth erupt. In reality, around one and half years old the child should go with the parent and take a ride in the dental chair. If the child is willing to proceed, an exam can be completed at that time. The things to remember, clean the teeth as soon as they come in, do not put the child to bed with a bottle with anything but water in it. When toothpaste is used, it should not have any flouride in it, till the child can spit out the toothpaste and not swallow it.

What should be used to clean a baby' s teeth?

A wash cloth with water can be used, as well as gauze pad and a small brush with soft bristles.

What is the difference between a pediatric dentist and a family dentist?

A Pediatric Dentist just treats children (1yr to 18yr). They are sometimes better equipped to handle children that are scared or have other problems. Their office is also decorated in a more child like setting. The general Dentist can probably take very good care of children and at less cost.

Who is a Pediatric Dentist?

A dental specialist who has taken 2 to 3 years more training so that they can handle more serious cases. They can do sedation and other behavior modifications to help the child.

How can I prepare my child for his first dental appointment?

Talk to them about what to expect. Make sound like it will be fun...do not mention pain at all. Generally, if the child does let us do anything, they will get a prize.

How often should I schedule dentist appointments for my child?

Every 6 months as should the parents.

When Will My Baby Start Getting Teeth?

That can happen over a wide time period. It depends on the child. It will generally start at 6 months.

What will happen during my child's first visit to the dentist?

The child will be seated in the dental chair. The chair will be raised and lowered to give the child a ride. Depending on the child, they may be asked to open their mouth. If they let us proceed, we will examine their teeth. What happens next depends on the child, from nothing more to polishing their teeth. But generally on the first visit the child gets a ride in the chair.
